What Personal Information Do We Gather and Why?

Comments

When visitors post comments on our site, we gather the data displayed in the comments form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to aid in spam detection.

A hash, which is an anonymized string made from your email address, may be given to the Gravatar service to check if you are using it. Once your comment is approved, your profile picture will be visible to the public alongside your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the site, be careful not to include images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Website visitors can download and extract any location data from images on our site.

Cookies

Should you leave a comment on our site, you can choose to save your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not need to fill in your details again when you comment more than once. These cookies will be kept for one year.

Visiting our login page sets a temporary cookie to verify if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie does not contain personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

We also set several cookies when you log in that save your login info and screen display choices. Login cookies are kept for two days and screen options cookies for a year. Choosing “Remember Me” will keep your login active for two weeks. Logging out will remove these cookies.

Editing or publishing an article sets an additional cookie in your browser. This cookie, which includes no personal data, shows the post ID of the article you edited and expires after 1 day.

Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles on this site may contain embedded content (e.g., videos, images, articles, etc.). Such content from other websites behaves in the same way as if the visitor has visited the source website.

These sites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content, including tracking if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who We Share Your Data With

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This helps us recognize and approve any subsequent comments automatically, rather than holding them for moderation.

For users who register on our website, we store the personal information they provide in their user profiles. Users can view, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (username changes are not permitted). Website administrators can also view and edit that information.

Your Data Rights

If you have an account or have left comments on this site, you may request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request the deletion of any personal data we hold about you. This does not cover data we must keep for administrative, legal, or security reasons.

Where Your Data Is Sent

Visitor comments may be checked using an automated spam detection service.
